I adore hotels. My love affair with them began when I was 10 years old and stayed with my mother for a week in the fabulous Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Since then I have visited many more, all over the world, but the thrill and anticipation of opening an hotel room door for the first time is still with me.
Since I married, planning, organising and anticipating holidays has become our favourite hobby and travelling, especially in the USA, is a passion. In America, the general rule is that we try at least two new hotels on each visit and do nt stay in the same hotel more than once (especially easy in Las Vegas).
However, in America as in other countries there are some favourites to which we are happy and, indeed, drawn, to return. All of these hotels offer very comfortable beds, good service and access to excellent food; these are our basic requirements. In addition, each has Something special which has made it unforgettable and which calls us back (to some, as often as possible).
LA FERME DU VERT
La Ferme has been converted from a farmhouse and outbuildings into a very comfortable small hotel about 20 miles northeast of Boulogne. The bedrooms are airy and newly refurbished and the restaurant offers delicious menus of locally sourced food, as well as cheeses made in the farms own fromagerie. It has been owned and run for years by the Bernard family who welcome guests like old friends. Ideal for overnight shopping trips as well as longer breaks, the hotel is full of character and the ducks which inhabit the pond in the farmyard are characters as well. Despite repeated reassurances from M. Barnard, I can never bring myself to eat any of the delicious duck dishes offered on the menu.
Something special, peace; the hotel is well away from any major roads and is incredibly quiet. You realise just how noisy your life is when the only thing you can hear on waking is birdsong - and ducks!
