I adore hotels. My love affair with them began when I was 10 years old and stayed with my mother for a week in the fabulous Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Since then I have visited many more, all over the world, but the thrill and anticipation of opening an hotel room door for the first time is still with me.
Since I married, planning, organising and anticipating holidays has become our favourite hobby and travelling, especially in the USA, is a passion. In America, the general rule is that we try at least two new hotels on each visit and do nt stay in the same hotel more than once (especially easy in Las Vegas).
However, in America as in other countries there are some favourites to which we are happy and, indeed, drawn, to return. All of these hotels offer very comfortable beds, good service and access to excellent food; these are our basic requirements. In addition, each has Something special which has made it unforgettable and which calls us back (to some, as often as possible).
RUFFLETS COUNTRY HOTEL
This beautiful turreted mansion house was built in 1924 and is situated in extensive immaculate grounds on the outskirts of the ancient cathedral city of St Andrews. Although it is only a short (5 minute) car journey to the city centre or the beach, the hotel is very much in the countryside. The comfortable rooms are sanctuaries of peace and tranquillity, most with views of the gardens; the tea trays are complemented with the worlds most delicious home-made shortbread, and Rufus the teddy is tucked into your bed for company. If you wish to be undisturbed, Rufus will stand guard outside your room. Beds are turned down in the evening and, in winter, finding a cosy hot water bottle nestled between your sheets is a delightful surprise. Whenever I walk through the door at Rufflets, stresses and strains vanish in the warmth of the welcome from the staff, many of whom have been here for years.
Something special, the garden; we stayed here for a week over Christmas and sat by the window in the cosy drawing room after dinner on Christmas Eve. The moon was very bright in a cloudless starry sky, it was incredibly cold and there was a heavy frost. The entire garden glowed silver and looked magical.
In summer, the lawns are lush and the abundance of scented flowers make it a favourite setting for wedding photographs or just walking.
The lavish Scottish breakfast is also very special!
