JOBS

I adore hotels. My love affair with them began when I was 10 years old and stayed with my mother for a week in the fabulous Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Since then I have visited many more, all over the world, but the thrill and anticipation of opening an hotel room door for the first time is still with me.

Since I married, planning, organising and anticipating holidays has become our favourite hobby and travelling, especially in the USA, is a passion. In America, the general rule is that we try at least two new hotels on each visit and do nt stay in the same hotel more than once (especially easy in Las Vegas).

However, in America as in other countries there are some favourites to which we are happy and, indeed, drawn, to return. All of these hotels offer very comfortable beds, good service and access to excellent food; these are our basic requirements. In addition, each has Something special which has made it unforgettable and which calls us back (to some, as often as possible).

THE ATLANTIC, WIMEREUX

The Atlantic is on the promenade at Wimereux. The whole hotel has been recently refurbished and the very comfortable bedrooms are all at the front of the hotel overlooking the English Channel. The restaurant offers exceptional food and the service is professional if not effusive. The drive to Wimereux along the clifftops from Calais (or Boulogne) gives fabulous views across to the English coast, are there are plenty of parking areas to stop and enjoy the fresh air. The occasional danger of being blown away adds a frisson to the experience.

Something special, the view; getting up early on a spring morning and opening the balcony doors to look out on the sunny beach and clear blue skies with the waves breaking gently, a fresh breeze to wake us up, and raucous seagulls to help! In late November, sitting snug and secure in the bar, sipping a kir royale and watching enormous breakers roar onto the beach, across the promenade and and lash against the windows.
