JOBS

I adore hotels. My love affair with them began when I was 10 years old and stayed with my mother for a week in the fabulous Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Since then I have visited many more, all over the world, but the thrill and anticipation of opening an hotel room door for the first time is still with me.

Since I married, planning, organising and anticipating holidays has become our favourite hobby and travelling, especially in the USA, is a passion. In America, the general rule is that we try at least two new hotels on each visit and do nt stay in the same hotel more than once (especially easy in Las Vegas).

However, in America as in other countries there are some favourites to which we are happy and, indeed, drawn, to return. All of these hotels offer very comfortable beds, good service and access to excellent food; these are our basic requirements. In addition, each has Something special which has made it unforgettable and which calls us back (to some, as often as possible).

THE DOMINICAN, BRUSSELS

The Dominican is a supremely comfortable and relaxing place to stay; in the 15th century it was a Dominican abbey (hence the name) and in the early 19th century the home of the French artist, Jacques-Louis David. The public rooms are large, elegantly decorated and tempt you to linger for coffee or a drink. Although I normally dislike piped music, the calming tones of gregorian chant playing quietly throughout the ground floor are just right and contribute to the relaxing environment. The bedrooms are modern, and much larger than one would normally find in a city centre hotel; showers and baths are luxurious and the atmosphere throughout the hotel is comfortable and welcoming.

Something special, the location; in the heart of Brussels and only a short walk to Grand Place. There are several museums and galleries, and dozens of good restaurants and shops in the immediate vicinity, as well as stops for the metro, trams and buses if you want to travel to the outskirts of the city.
