I adore hotels. My love affair with them began when I was 10 years old and stayed with my mother for a week in the fabulous Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Since then I have visited many more, all over the world, but the thrill and anticipation of opening an hotel room door for the first time is still with me.
Since I married, planning, organising and anticipating holidays has become our favourite hobby and travelling, especially in the USA, is a passion. In America, the general rule is that we try at least two new hotels on each visit and do nt stay in the same hotel more than once (especially easy in Las Vegas).
However, in America as in other countries there are some favourites to which we are happy and, indeed, drawn, to return. All of these hotels offer very comfortable beds, good service and access to excellent food; these are our basic requirements. In addition, each has Something special which has made it unforgettable and which calls us back (to some, as often as possible).
THE OCEANIA ,ST MALO
This hotel is situated a short walk from St Malo Old Town, looking out across Sillon Beach to St Malo Bay and the sea. It was refurbished to a very high standard in 2008; bathrooms are gorgeous with huge shower cubicles (plenty of room for two!) and the beds supremely comfortable. Seaview rooms have balconies with views of the Old Town and the beaches. Breakfast is good if not lavish, and it is the only meal offered. However, an excellent restaurant called La Table d'Henri is opposite the hotel and of course the Old Town is absolutely crammed with places to eat. The proximity to the Old Town is a real plus for those who enjoy historic buildings, walking, shopping and eating. St Malo is served by ferries from the UK and a break here can be enjoyed without a car, especially since there is very little on-street parking available. The hotel does offer private underground parking but in this case a small car is a definite advantage since it’s a bit of a tight squeeze.
Must not be confused with the “Escale Oceania” which is further east but on the same road.
“Something special” the 180° views from our balcony; the Old Town to the west through to the curve of the beaches to the east. Lovely to enjoy during the day and magical illumination at night.
Also the pillows, something I normally take for granted and don’t notice unless they are uncomfortable; these ones were like sinking into a cloud - gorgeous!
