JOBS

I adore hotels. My love affair with them began when I was 10 years old and stayed with my mother for a week in the fabulous Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Since then I have visited many more, all over the world, but the thrill and anticipation of opening an hotel room door for the first time is still with me.

Since I married, planning, organising and anticipating holidays has become our favourite hobby and travelling, especially in the USA, is a passion. In America, the general rule is that we try at least two new hotels on each visit and do nt stay in the same hotel more than once (especially easy in Las Vegas).

However, in America as in other countries there are some favourites to which we are happy and, indeed, drawn, to return. All of these hotels offer very comfortable beds, good service and access to excellent food; these are our basic requirements. In addition, each has Something special which has made it unforgettable and which calls us back (to some, as often as possible). l will start close to home........

    THE SWAN HOTEL,LAVENHAM, SUFFOLK

The Swan is only an hours drive away and so we visit it fairly regularly. It is always our first choice to celebrate a special occasion or just to have a day out. Whether it be for a meal, a weekend break or a longer holiday, we have never been disappointed. The lovely old (15th century) building has been refurbished to a very high standard with every modern comfort in the bedrooms, while still retaining the medieval features which give the building its unique atmosphere.     The hotel offers different pleasures according to the season; a favourite summer treat is a Swan Cream Tea on the lawn in the terraced gardens. On a snowy winter morning it is a pot of fragrant coffee with home made biscuits and a large pile of newspapers while nestled in a comfy armchair in front of one of the roaring log fires. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Some have been here for many years; they all have a personal commitment to making sure everything is perfect for their guests and it shows. On a recent visit I saw one of the receptionists hurry from the desk to offer her arm to an elderly guest whom she had noticed hesitating at the top of some stairs. It was done gently with a smile and kind words, without prompting or request and was obviously much appreciated by the gentleman concerned.

Something special is the atmosphere; we recently attended a winter wedding here and the ceremony was held in the Wool Hall at dusk; the hall was lit by candles and looked magical. And another something special; at the same wedding, one of the managers looked after the arrangements and formalities from first thing in the morning and took great care to ensure that everything ran perfectly throughout the day. He eventually saw the last of the very happy guests off to their rooms well after midnight and when I thanked him for all his hard work he told me that it was a pleasure and he had really enjoyed himself.
