Myanmar and Japan are tied for the most popular destinations, with three each, in terms of Europeans visiting the countries in the past 12 months, online professional portal Travel Daily News announced based on hotel booking data from millions of Agoda.com customers in Europe.

Myanmar’s Mawlamyine, the capital of the Mon State, has seen bookings nearly doubled this year from 2014, according to a study by Agoda, one of the world’s leading accommodation sites and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group. The study, entitled Travel Smart, has just been put out, showing which of Asia’s destinations are seeing the fastest growth in visitors from Europe.

“Some amazing destinations in Myanmar are slowly opening up thanks to improving infrastructure. The traditional tourist loop, which used to include just Yangon, Mandalay, and Bagan, is expanding,” Travel Daily News cited Errol Cooke, Vice President, Partner Services of Agoda, saying.
